Jyotish: what Vedic astrology actually studies

20 August 2026

Jyotish, often translated as Vedic astrology, is one of the Vedangas — the limbs of Vedic learning. Its subject is the position of the grahas (planets) at a given moment and the way the classical texts read those positions in relation to a person's life.

A consultation begins with the Janampatrika: the date, exact time and place of birth. From this the lagna (ascendant), the twelve bhavas (houses) and the placement of each graha are calculated, along with the running mahadasha and antardasha periods.

In practice, a reading looks at a few things together — the strength and placement of the grahas, the yogas formed between them, the dasha period currently running, and gochar (transits). Questions families usually bring are about marriage matching (guna milan), career direction, health of elders, property decisions and the timing of ceremonies.

Where the texts indicate a difficult period, the tradition prescribes upay — recitation of a specific mantra, daan, fasting on a particular day, or a puja such as Pitru Dosh Shanti or Kaal Sarp Dosh Nivaran. These are performed as part of the tradition, not as a guarantee of a specific outcome.

For a reading at our Sansthan, bring the most accurate birth details available. A difference of a few minutes can change the lagna, and with it much of the chart. Where the birth time is unknown, the reading is done more cautiously and the limits of it are stated openly.
